Multiple Windows allowing for cooperative multitasking was one of these ideas. But, since Windows was barely a dream the Apple II (MAC System Software 1.0-3.0) ruled the roost.

The 1990’s quickly changed the Desktop Operating System game with the introduction of Windows 3.x systems. Like many long time Windows users, Windows 3.11 was my first real foray into the Windows systems and began a long term work relationship. In 1995 Microsoft began what would become the biggest breakthrough in Desktop Operating Systems when it introduced Windows 95 to the general public. Windows 95 was the first real effort at Plug And Play devices (PNP) with the idea you could take any printer or other device and simply plug them into a computer and “poof” it would magically work. While it was a great idea, it still doesn’t always work like that.

Home computing continued on through the year 2000 with the introduction of Windows 98 which had some improvements over Windows 95 and of course the dreaded Windows ME.

Enterprise computing is where Microsoft would make their biggest splash with the 4th edition of Windows NT called Windows NT 4.0. Windows NT 4.0 quickly gained favor over a then flag bearer of Novell Netware who at the introduction of Microsoft NT server had a 90% market share. Microsoft was able to quickly outpace Novell not only because of an outstanding marketing campaign but also because Microsoft used TCP/IP networking protocol which enabled Microsoft to easily connect to the internet. In 2000 Microsoft introduced Windows 2000 which was an upgrade of the Windows NT 4.0 system and had a much cleaner feel to the user interface as well as other enhancements.

Now where it gets confusing for most people is with the introduction of Windows XP in 2001. Windows XP introduced different flavors such as XP Home and XP Professional. One obviously made for general consumer while the other was made for an enterprise environment. Since Windows XP has been the vanguard of the Microsoft Desktop Operating Systems for ten years now it was not without its issues when first released and by many accounts was not considered a stable platform until after its update called Service Pack 2. Once Windows XP became a “stable” platform it became the Operating System of preference to most standard computer users and is still one of the more popular operating systems.

In 2006 Windows Vista was released and quickly shocked the IT world. After our first install of Windows Vista many IT professionals quickly had flashbacks to Windows ME, it was a huge resource hog that liked to crash just because it could. Many of us who had tested the first Beta version of Windows Vista were quite shocked at how unstable Vista turned out. In fact many IT Professionals, especially Small Business consultants recommended companies not move up to Windows Vista unless they were buying a new computer.

2009 brought us Windows 7, what many believe Windows Vista should have been from the beginning. Windows 7 is much more resource friendly and so far appears to be much more stable. It has many enhancements built to the operating system to make it much prettier than Windows XP but more user friendly than Windows Vista. Windows 7 is much nicer to laptops especially netbooks and has been ported over to cell phones in an attempt to match Apples iPhone and Google’s Android Phone System. With Windows 7, pretty much just drop in a couple of gigabytes of RAM (Random Access Memory) on an average video card and your good, Vista just was not that kind.

What I forgot about the servers, no, not really. After Windows 2000 the servers and the desktops had a parting of the ways. Servers are now called by the year they are supposed to have been released. As of today while a majority of Servers are still Windows Server 2003, the most current flavor is Windows Server 2008 R2. Oh and trust me there are still plenty of Server 2000 systems in the enterprise. But does any of this matter to a non IT guy, no really does it?

The future holds some interesting avenues. I have seen snippets of Windows 8 and to me it really looks like Windows Phone 7 in many ways, many are speculating with the extreme and sudden popularity of Tablets that Windows 8 is being geared toward Tablet and Cloud Computing. Of course there is the “Cloud” where very little of your data resides locally. With you having such a small local footprint the devices you are using can be smaller as long as they can get to the internet in order to access the cloud. With AT&T having bought T-Mobile to have immediate access to a much faster network (read 4G network) and all wireless delivery companies building cellular devices into Tablets, the cloud is right around the corner. Don’t worry we are sure Microsoft has a solution for better Tablet Computing (I’m guessing Windows 8 will be their start), heck what do you think Windows Office 365(live) is doing? With all the changes that have happened over the last 30 years all I can tell you for sure is to either love change or hang up the keyboard, because I’m sure in 30 more years the 32 gigabyte thumb/flash drive will have gone the way of that super-fast 1.4 megabyte, super small 3.5 inch floppy disk.

Better computing to all

FREE-ACCION – Small Business Workshop

FREE-ACCION – Small Business Workshop

Please join us on July 15th for a no-cost, informative presentation about Accion and how they may provide access to capital for your business. We hope you like some of the changes we've made, in part with help from the STEM grant.

Classroom/Lecture Capture - We have installed 31 Classrooms with Lecture Capture devices, called Media Site this product is from Sonic Foundry. These classrooms have been setup with stationary cameras and microphones. All you have to do is setup a schedule with the Teaching and Learning Center and teach like normal. In addition we have 3 rooms on campus which have stationary cameras and microphones but are setup for mobile capture devices. This is a great tool to help your students study and we at the TLC are more than happy to get you started.

Podiums - 9 Classrooms now have new podiums. We have installed (we feel) easier to use podiums in rooms that had limited instructor areas before. The new podiums were installed in 2 science labs in the Academics building and the remainder where installed in the numerous Computer Classrooms in the Business, Occupational and Technologies Building. These podiums match what we had previously installed in the Vocational and Technical Building.

New Projectors - With all of the technology upgrades going on we were also to install and add new projectors to some rooms. This will really help the campus in the future as we have streamlined our makes and models of projectors to just a few. Additionally the new projectors are much more energy conscious than the projectors they replaced and the bulbs should last twice as long. Wow, a little more green and much more cost effective, what more could you ask for?

New Document Camera - Yes, we had to replace some of the old Canon and Elmo Document cameras. We chose a brand called AverMedia. Most of the AverMedia Document Camera have a much smaller foot print and will be less intrusive into the teaching area while still delivering a high content Doc. Camera.

Online Learning Platform - The Teaching and Learning Center is aggressively working on an Online Teaching Certificate for current faculty. With Dr. Najib Manea, PhD working on theory and design, Philip Leimbach, MCT is working on applications and tools. Question I have is that such a good thing?

Sure we want great communication streams between the hired hands and the bosses. But, rarely is that the case. So when corporate gets on their high horses and demands more transparent communications I think they're missing one very important element. If employees are telling the companies what they think and their immediate bosses either do not communicate why ideas or bad or why ideas can not be implemented or show disdain for employees who speak up then it is my thought that by the nature of the beast you will only create a larger rift between management and employees. Remember it is the employees who are the engine of the company. You might do the steering but you're not going anywhere without a water pump or carburetor.

Now if they do not want that rift leave things as they are and forget all about the transparent communications. Or if they truly want to move communications through the channels as quickly and as smartly as possible, then you need to review each and every management person and cull out those who are still in the ancient mode of shut up and work or leave. Just my thoughts.

TLC Classes Nearing End of Semester

The Teaching and Learning Center classes are nearing the end of the semester. The Media Site Systems are staged and should be live before the summer semester starts.

In topics classes on the Podcasting class remains. It will be held next Monday (4/20/09) only!

Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 is still in full swing, however the Outlook 2007 class has been canceled. Currently it is under discussion whether or not we will have summer Microsoft classes. If you really need them let us know.

Reminder Photoshop CS3 does not end until May 7th. So I go along, do what I can to the server, load up the dolly to take the new capture systems out to the car. So far so average!

Well when I walk out to my surprise there are no cars in the parking area. Especially MINE! Well now I would have thought it had been stolen if all of the other cars had not been missing. Come to find out all vehicles had been moved pending the arrival of Mrs. Obama later that evening. So now the hunt was on, where was my University Vehicle (just glad it wasn't my own truck, read on and you will understand) had it been towed or what?

So the I am told by Media Technology to go to the "SUB" administration and ask a particular individual. Well he was in a meeting because obviously this is a huge day on campus. So I speak with his assistant. She was under the impression that all vehicles had been moved to the main campus parking structure. Since it is just a short jaunt over to the parking structure I stroll over, climb the stairs to the top and begin my decent. Guess what, no car! Well there is a parking area just across the street (right on route 66) so I cruise it, still NO car! Well now isn't this interesting?

I find someone from parking services. He says that all cars that they moved were moved to the UNM Hospital garage across campus. OK, no worries I walk over to the UNMH garage walk up one side and down the other and guess what, yep NO CAR! OK now my 320 pounds of out of shape being is wearing my energy down.

So I call back to the "SUB" administration. They call automotive services who had brought over spare keys to move the car. Come to find out it was in their lot. No problem, at least now I know where it is located. After I walked back across campus. A gentleman from automotive services comes to pick me up and takes me to the car. Thought the adventure had come to a close I did learn somethings.

One, give my pager number to the girls at the front desk here on campus, because while my cell phone may not work underground, my pager does! Because guess who knew my car had been moved and had a phone number for me to call to get it back?

Two, watch something on the news other than the weather. I could have taken care of all of this at another date.

Three, the secret service keeps their dogs in good shape, bomb dogs that is.

Four, Philip keeps himself in bad shape. Round just is not good for tracing around campus.

Five, DO NOT believe the media. They say Obama supporters are all young and vibrant. yeah right if 80 is young and vibrant!

And last but not least it is not polite to tell them older ladies what you really think of the two candidates when your asked for the 6th time if you are registered to vote!

ps. oh yeah if in Albuquerque, Golden Pride Ribs are not bad for lunch.

Media Site

Well we tried out our Media Site mobile systems. There are a few things that have become apparent. Number 1, is that Universities still like to kill trees. Number 2, is don't be in a hurry. The more of a hurry you are in the slower the process, something along the lines of watching a pot boil! Number 3, companies who deal with universities play things so close to the vest and have no concept of outside operations that they have a hard time communicating procedures!

So while we are trying to get our static IP addresses in (thanks Vista!) I also have to map out a plan of how to build a Win Server 2003 Enterprise, Install the Capture Systems which have not arrived, get this done at a remote campus over 2 hours away, make it to the install and training sessions at our main campus AND still get stuff done for new faculty orientations. font-size:26pt'>Podcasting

A Short History of Podcasting

Podcasting is a play on the words IPod and broadcasting. The term took hold about 2004 and quickly became a generically coined phrase. Podcasting allows you to publish Audio recordings, traditionally to RSS or Atom Feeds via blogs. Therefore, a Podcast is your blog read aloud. Now some of you might wonder; what is the difference between a Podcast and a Vodcast, actually it is all in the name. A Vodcast is a Video on Demand Broadcast.

Why Should You Podcast

How do you reach your students? Do you simply teach them and forget them? With Podcasting you can now allow your students a 24/7 portal to you, without phone calls or a continuous barrage of emails asking the same questions! Podcasting allows you an avenue to your students that while very similar to Blogging gives a much more personal touch!

In addition, a Podcast allows you to continue your class without using classroom space. Therefore, if you know you will be out of town, the weather is bad, or you are sick, you can build in a system where your students can grab the Podcast and

The Script

Scripting? Of course writing what you are going to say before you say it makes a world of difference. I strongly recommend scripting your content out and practicing it a few times before actually sitting down at the microphone. Remember to be thoughtful and insightful in what you are going to say, the students will not be there to ask you questions so you should consider giving them as much information as possible in anticipation of their questions. Practicing your script will allow your presentation to flow smoothly and the information to be delivered in an accurate manner.

Software & Hardware Needed to Podcast

Hardware

First, we will look at the hardware you will need to Podcast. You will need a computer, yes, a laptop works well. Next, I suggest a headset with microphone, nothing fancy a $20 set from a local mass-market store will work fine. However, as you advance you might want to consider an upgrade for quality reasons. Now a standard microphone and speaker system will work, but in my experience, the quality is not as good. In addition, you have to work about technical things like feedback and echo.

Software

There are many brand names when it comes to recording your voice for web use. With Macintosh (Apple), you can use software like Garage Band. For this class we are using Windows PC so we will look some free software called Audacity. Audacity is also available for Mac and Linux.

Audacity comes in two parts. First, Audacity itself can be found at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows the second item you will more than likely need is called LAME, which can be found at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3 both places you will also find full installation instructions. Now you will see other download options on these pages. While there is, nothing wrong with installing the add-ons I recommend learning the software before installing more than you must.

Loading the Software Up

How do I download and install the LAME MP3 encoder?

Because of software patents, we cannot distribute MP3 encoding software ourselves. Follow these instructions to use the free LAME encoder to export MP3 files with Audacity.

Windows

Go to the LAME download page.

Under "For Audacity on Windows", left-click on the link "libmp3lame-win-3.97.zip" and save the zip folder to anywhere on your computer.

When you have finished downloading the ZIP folder, unzip it and save the file lame_enc.dll that it contains to anywhere on your computer.

The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command, Audacity will ask you where lame_enc.dll is saved.

In case of difficulty, please view our more detailed instructions at the Audacity Wiki.

Mac OS 9 or X

Go to the LAME download page.

Download either libmp3lame or the version of LameLib for your operating system.

When you have finished downloading, use Stuffit Expander to extract the files. (This may happen automatically.)

Save the file called "LameLib" or libmp3lame.dylib anywhere on your computer.

The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command, Audacity will ask you where LameLib or libmp3lame.dylib is saved.

Audacity

Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista: Audacity 1.2.6 installer (.exe file, 2.1 MB) – Is the latest version of the free Audacity audio editor. The values in the "Minimum RAM/processor speed" column will be fine for smaller/shorter tasks, especially if unnecessary programs are closed.

<colgroup><col style='width:196px'/><col style='width:136px'/><col style='width:110px'/></colgroup>

Windows version

Recommended RAM/
processor speed

Minimum RAM/
processor speed

Windows 98, ME

128 MB / 500 MHz

64 MB / 300 MHz

Windows 2000, XP

512 MB/1 GHz

128 MB/300 MHz

Windows Vista Home Basic

2 GB / 1 GHz

512 MB / 1 GHz

Windows Vista Home Premium/
Business/Ultimate

4 GB / 2 GHz

1 GB / 1 GHz

Table 1 Requirments for Audacity

Recording Your Podcast

Table 2 Screen Shot of Audacity

In this section, we will discuss the basic menus and the buttons need to start a Podcast

Edit Your Podcast

Below is the basic editing screen.
